What is L-Ergothioneine?

L-Ergothioneine is also called Ergothioneine, Ergo or EGT.

It’s the naturally occurring form of the amino acid ergothioneine. The “L-” prefix refers to the specific stereoisomer, the biologically active form utilized by organisms.

Ergo is a unique amino acid and powerful antioxidant.

L-Ergothioneine Foods Sources

L-Ergothioneine is found in various foods, particularly in mushrooms, and to a lesser extent in other foods like black and red beans, liver, and oat bran.

Ergothioneine Key Benefits

1. Antioxidant Protection

L-Ergothioneine helps neutralize free radicals, unstable molecules generated by UV exposure, pollution, and other environmental stressors.

2. Anti-Aging Benefits

Because of its ability to protect cells from oxidative damage, L-Ergothioneine is often included in anti-aging skincare products.

3. Protection Against UV Damage

L-Ergothioneine offers protection against UV radiation by reducing the oxidative stress caused by sun exposure.

4. Stability in Formulations

L-Ergothioneine is a relatively stable ingredient, which makes it suitable for inclusion in a wide range of skincare formulations, including serums, creams, and lotions. It is often combined with other antioxidants, like vitamins C and E, to enhance its protective effects.

How does Ergothioneine work?

Antioxidant aspect: L-Ergothioneine has a thiol group attached to an imidazole ring, contributing to its antioxidant properties. Its chemical structure allows it to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and protect cells from oxidative stress.

Antiaging aspect: Sirtuins are a family of proteins regulating cellular processes, including aging, inflammation, and stress resistance. Ergothioneine is claimed to activate these enzymes, which may help repair and maintain DNA integrity.

Ergothioneine various applications

In Skincare

  • Anti-aging creams and serums: To reduce wrinkles and improve skin firmness.
  • Brightening products: To combat dullness and hyperpigmentation.
  • Sun protection products: As a supplement to UV filters, providing an additional antioxidant defense.
  • Moisturizers: To protect and repair the skin barrier.

In Dietary Supplements

  • Capsules and Tablets
  • Powderforms for mixing with drinks or smoothies
  • Blended formulas with other antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals

EGT Manufacturing Process

Microorganism Selection: Certain bacteria or fungi, such as Mycobacterium smegmatis or Saccharomyces cerevisiae, can be genetically modified or naturally produce ergothioneine.

Fermentation: The selected microorganism is cultivated in a fermentation medium rich in nutrients (e.g., sugars, amino acids) that support its growth and ergothioneine production. The process typically occurs in bioreactors under controlled conditions (temperature, pH, aeration).

Harvesting: After fermentation, the broth containing ergothioneine is harvested. The cells are separated from the liquid (broth) using centrifugation or filtration.

Purification: The ergothioneine in the broth is then extracted and purified using techniques such as chromatography or precipitation.

Drying and Formulation: The purified ergothioneine is dried to form a stable powder or solution, which can be formulated into products.

Ergothioneine dosage

Ergothioneine is generally considered safe for consumption.

Research shows that a daily intake of 25 mg of Ergothioneine is adequate and safe.
